In order to access the Prigmore Family Tree at www.ancestry.com, one must either be a member at $12.95/mo or be invited by the author of an existing family tree.
As most people visiting the web site are not subscribers and have not yet been invited, the concept of using direct access to www.ancestry.com on the front page of the website clearly does not work.
The invitation process within ancestry has several steps:
a. one must enter the name and e-mail of invitee
b. the options are editor (can add people), contributor (can add into such as stories and photos), or guest (just a looker).
c. there is the option to find the person in the family tree.
It seems to me that as part of the membership, one should be 'invited' into the family tree on ancestry as a contributor. This gives a benefit to membership and creates a level of participation that will help make the information in the tree more robust on a 'self help' basis.
There will be labor involved in entering the name and e-mail (can this be semi automated as part of the membership application process, at lease to a cut and paste routine?). Should we also do a search of the tree to try determine is the person is in the tree? If they are not, do notify and ask they try to find the nearest? Should we contract this process vs trying to do it ourselves? should we ask for volunteers to do this including searching?
Ancestry.com allows an export of the tree as a GEDCOM file. To get to this, log into ancestry.com, double click on the Family Tree box on the top line (I added a Fake tree to make this work), under Prigmore, select manage, then export.
I currently do not know how we go from a GEDCOM file to a search capability within the website, but I suspect this will be the best route.
